About

Fort Aguada is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Goa. This Portuguese fort was designed in 1612 as a defensive structure against the Dutch. The fort contains two sections, Upper Fort Aguada and Lower Fort Aguada. Inside the Upper Fort there is an old lighthouse built in 1864 and is said to be the oldest of its kind in Asia.

In 1976 this lighthouse stopped operation, and a new modern lighthouse was built, just outside the fort. Today, visitors can purchase a ticket and see the grounds of Aguada Lighthouse and D.G.P.S. Station to visit the modern lighthouse and climb right up to the top.

The 360-degree view from the top of the lighthouse is breathtaking. One can see the beaches of Candolim, Calangute, and Baga to the north, Fort Aguada to the east, Panaji and Mormugao to the south, and the Arabian Sea to the west.
